Home videos
The screen projection playing on the house shows family videos my adoptive mom took of me throughout my childhood. I am very fond of those memories, and am very grateful to have experienced them and showcase them in my work and to the public. I believe that making these art pieces connects me to my ancestors and family I have never met. I hopes they are proud of me. This house is a commemoration to my birth parents. As I was born in Mirebalais, Haiti, I built what I believed my home looked like. The walls are adorned with decals of documents, family photos and certificates linking to my life in Haiti and abroad. My home is built upon rubble to symbolize the earthquakes in Haiti. To the right of the house is a roof with the words written, “Mwen sonje ou Manman,” translating to, “I miss you mama” in my native language of Haitian Creole. To Mom and Dad,
Love Naomie.
Closeup of the inside of the home I made: An email about my adoptive mom excited to adopt me, my old passport photos, a map of Petion-Ville, my birth mother's death certificate, and pictures of me and my adoptive family.
